The Buckeye District was organized in 1950 - the third Saturday and Sunday of September under the banner of the Buckeye Rose Conference and was known under this title until 1954, when it was officially changed to the Buckeye District of the American Rose Society. The Cleveland Rose Society served as host to the organizational meeting which was held in the auditorium of the Mentor High School. At that time there were six (6) official rose clubs or societies in the state and all were represented. These were the Cincinnati Rose Club, the Greater Cincinnati Rose Society, the Columbus Rose Club, the Central Ohio Rose Society (Columbus), the Miami Valley Rose Society (Dayton), and the Cleveland Rose Society. The nurserymen of Mentor assisted greatly in this organizational meeting. The official speaker at the Saturday banquet was a Mr. Hastings, Secretary of the All-America Rose Selections, who read a paper on new roses for the future. One hundred and thirty-five rosarians attended the meeting. One Sunday the delegates visited the rose fields of Gerald Klein, Joseph J. Kern, Melvin Wyant, and Paul Bosley. Arnold Davis was Master of Ceremonies, Chairman of the Convention was Robert Simpson and Edward Wickert served as Treasurer. |
